SOME NOTABLE COMMENTS

“…(the book) is a riveting account of the trials and tribulations that Mr Thakur faced during his career. It picks up stories from his career and narrates them in a manner that is both humorous and poignant, bringing forth a multitude of dimensions that a police officer is subjected to in his life”.

Shri Sanjay Kundu IPS, Director General of Police, Himachal Pradesh

“Brilliant! …… What a crispy narration yet understated. Having been a part of Onkar Thakur’s Journey for some part of his career, I feel delighted to read this book. I vouchsafe to the readers that the experience narrated here, besides being invaluable and interesting, is educating too”.

Sh. Tarun Shridhar, IAS (HP84). Former Secretary GOI, At Present Administrative Member Central Administrative Tribunal, Lucknow.

CONTENTS

The work is not an autobiography. It is a first-hand account of cases and incidents which the author came across during his career and were outside the realm of the ordinary. A brief introduction is as follows:

1. The Spirited Probationer:                A trainee Police officer gets led into a piquant situation by his enthusiasm.

2. First Day First Show:           On the first day in the Police Training College, the officer has an unsavoury experience in a Police Station.

3. The Eunuch, Who Was Not! The gripping story of a Criminal masquerading as a eunuch who abused and killed a child in cold blood. While the trial court convicted him of the death penalty, the High Court acquitted him, and he vanished before the Supreme Court could tighten the noose around his neck.

4. A Perfect Plot:         Another unusual crime story successfully worked out by Police under the author’s stewardship.

5. A Brush with Gangsters:                  A lively narration of the author’s tryst with the criminal gangs operating in areas around Delhi-Ghaziabad borders.

6. An Unusual Self Promotion: A comic but real story of the author’s promotion to District Superintendent of Police.

7. Surviving a Rescue Operation:        A riveting account of how a Police Officer finds his job threatened while rescuing five villagers stranded on a small isle amidst a ravaging, flooded Bias river.

8. Hunting Down a Man-eater:            An enthralling story of hunting a leopard, who was declared a man-eater by the crowd.

9. Murderers at Large:            Unknown criminals murdered five persons, including a woman and her child, and made away with about 250 sheep and goats. Ironically, the Police failed to bring the murderers to book.

10. Revenge of the Man in Olive Green:          An army officer gets mistakenly roughed up by Police. He retaliates with the help of his brethren-in-arms.

11. A Governor’s Air-crash:    The intriguing story of an air-crash, in which Mr Surendra Nath, Governor Punjab, was killed along with twelve family members.

12. An Encounter with a General:       An ‘accidental’ encounter with a three-star when the author was going to Shimla.

13. CBI Raid on a Politician:   An absorbing account of the CBI raid on a famous politician at Mandi, when the author worked as the S. P. Mandi HP.

14. Wrath of a Judge:  Some acts of commission and omission were alleged against the author for non-registration of a case of rape in a Police Station after 14 years of the incident. It took ten years to clear himself of the disgrace.

15. The Murder by a Leopard?            An immersing account of a Murder case lays bare the intricacies and intrigues of an investigation.

16. A Mysterious Terrorist Encounter:            A thrilling story of an alleged terrorist encounter that turned out to be a made-up story.

17. Himachal CPMT Paper Leak Case:           As the caption suggests, it is an account of an investigation of a high-profile case, which will interest the layman and the professional alike.
